Why Cage Size Matters So Much
Birds in too-small cages develop physical and psychological problems — feather plucking, self-mutilation, aggression, and depression. Unlike mammals, birds express their distress primarily through feather destruction, which is extremely difficult to reverse once established.
Width vs Height — Which Matters More?
For most birds, width is more important than height because birds fly horizontally. A tall, narrow cage is actually worse than a wide, shorter one of similar volume. The bird should be able to extend both wings fully without touching the sides.
Bar Spacing Is a Safety Issue
Bar spacing that is too wide allows birds to get their head or feet trapped, causing injury or death. Always verify bar spacing before purchasing any cage. The spacing listed for each species is a maximum — tighter is always safer.
Out-of-Cage Time
Even the best cage is not a substitute for daily out-of-cage time. Parrots need a minimum of 3–4 hours outside the cage each day for mental health. Smaller species like budgies and canaries benefit from daily supervised flight time too.
