Can Cats Eat Human Food? The Complete Guide

Cats are obligate carnivores — meaning they must eat meat to survive. Unlike dogs, cats cannot produce certain essential nutrients themselves and must get them from animal protein. This makes their dietary needs very specific and means many human foods are either unnecessary or outright dangerous for them.

The Most Dangerous Foods for Cats

  • Onions and garlic — Destroy red blood cells causing anaemia. All forms including powder are toxic.
  • Grapes and raisins — Can cause sudden kidney failure, even in small amounts.
  • Chocolate — Contains theobromine and caffeine, both toxic to cats.
  • Xylitol — Artificial sweetener found in many products. Causes liver failure.
  • Raw dough — Yeast expands in the stomach and produces toxic alcohol.
  • Alcohol — Even tiny amounts can cause liver and brain damage.

The Milk Myth

Despite what cartoons suggest, most adult cats are lactose intolerant. Cow’s milk causes digestive upset in the majority of cats. If you want to give your cat a milk treat, use specially formulated cat milk instead.

Safe Foods Cats Can Eat

Plain cooked chicken, turkey, salmon, and tuna (in small amounts) are all safe. Cooked eggs and small amounts of plain cooked vegetables like carrots or peas are also fine as occasional treats. Always remove bones and never season with salt, garlic, or onion.
