Why Breed Match Matters
The number one reason dogs end up in shelters is a mismatch between the dog’s needs and the owner’s lifestyle. A Border Collie in a small apartment with a low-activity owner will become destructive and anxious. A Great Dane with a marathon runner will struggle to keep up. Getting the match right from the start makes for a happy dog and a happy owner.
The Most Important Factors
Activity level and living space are the two biggest factors in breed compatibility. Exercise needs vary enormously — from the 20 minutes a day a French Bulldog needs, to the 3+ hours a Husky or Border Collie requires. Getting this wrong leads to behavioural problems within months.
First Time Owners
Some breeds are genuinely unsuitable for first-time owners — not because they are bad dogs, but because they need experienced handling. Huskies, Chows, Akitas, and some terrier breeds have strong instincts and independent temperaments that require confident, consistent training from day one.
