How Old Is My Pet in Human Years?
The old “multiply by 7” rule for dogs is a myth. A 2-year-old dog is more like a 24-year-old human in terms of physical maturity — they hit their equivalent of puberty very quickly and then age more slowly. This calculator uses the genomic aging model published in Cell Systems, which gives a far more accurate picture across a dog’s whole lifespan.
Why Cats Live Longer Than Dogs
Cats consistently outlive dogs of similar body size — the opposite of what we see in humans, where larger people don’t necessarily die younger. The reason is largely genetic and metabolic, with cats having evolved a more efficient cellular repair mechanism. Indoor cats live significantly longer than outdoor cats on average.
When Is My Pet Actually a Senior?
For dogs, it depends on size. Small dogs enter their senior years around 10–12 years. Large breeds are considered senior from around 7–8 years. For cats, the senior threshold is typically 7 years, with cats over 11 considered geriatric. Senior status means more frequent vet check-ups, not that anything is wrong.
